The Hewlett-Packard partnership began on a Stanford University football field. In 1930, Dave and Bill met for the first time while playing on the freshman football team, starting a friendship that continued with radio engineering classes. A natural athlete, Dave lettered in football and basketball and set records in track as a freshman. He also played end for Stanford football’s legendary “Vow Boys,” the 1933 team that vowed to defeat rival USC and end their 27-game winning streak.
