In 1981, Mabel Esteves became the first female engineer at HP Puerto Rico. She arrived at HP already a vocal advocate for women engineers; as a student, Esteves founded a chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at the University of Puerto Rico. During her 22 years with HP, Esteves remained involved with SWE, chairing the 1988 national student conference, founding two more chapters and serving on the board of directors.
