William Redington Hewlett was born on May 20, 1913. He started out life in Ann Arbor, where his father taught medicine at the University of Michigan, but the family moved to California in 1916 when his father accepted a position at Stanford University. Though Bill would travel the world, Stanford and the surrounding area would be his home for the rest of his life, and he would help to transform the region.
