Date: 1971

From 1969–1971, Dave left Hewlett-Packard to serve as Deputy Secretary of Defense, focusing on procurement. His work would garner him multiple medals and commendations, and in 1997, the Department of Defense named an annual award, the David Packard Excellence in Acquisition Award, in recognition of his contributions to the department’s acquisitions practices.
