Package Deal: Recycling Packaging
Date: 1993
Steve Henning, a packaging engineer in the Storage Divison at HP’s Greeley, Colorado, facility, led the division’s effort to use recycled material in its polystyrene-foam packaging. Henning brought similar recycling goals to Germany, where retail customers could remove packaging and place it in bins when leaving stores. Packaging engineers (second image, from left to right) Kevin Howard, Helmut Finckh, Paul Russell and Henning demonstrated the initative. In 1994, the Böblingen facility went one step further by testing a new product called HP Packaging Assembly Concept (PAC), which used an interior foam chassis to greatly reduce the number of mechanical parts and packaging required while shipping.
