Filling in Blanks: HP Magnetic Program Cards
Date: 1970s–1980s
Since semiconductor memory was still in development to allow computers to retain instructions without a continuous power source, early calculators received their instructions through special magnetic cards that users could program, then insert and change out as desired. This would continue until Hewlett-Packard began offering an electronic memory option with the introduction of the C series in 1976.
