A Real Team Player: Yas Shimoguchi
Date: 1959
Yas Shimoguchi (left foreground) was reportedly the first Japanese American ever hired by Hewlett-Packard Company, but his legacy at the company goes far deeper than that. Yas joined HP in 1951, working in the Machine Shop, and remained with the company for an astonishing 39 years. During that time, he was active in a variety of company athletic leagues and activities, including basketball, golf and fishing. Retirement didn’t slow him down either; in the 1990s he headed up a group of Hewlett-Packard retirees.
