David and Lucile Packard Foundation
Date: 1984
Dave and Lu Packard established the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in 1964 to help manage their philanthropic giving. After Dave died in 1996 (Lu predeceased him in 1987), he left the bulk of his estate to the foundation, making it the single largest shareholder of Hewlett-Packard Company. Several Packard family members sit on the foundation’s board to this day, including Dave and Lu’s daughter Julie Packard, pictured at left. A marine biologist, Julie is also executive director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium and chair of the Monterey Bay Research Institute board of directors, both of which were founded in 1984 with support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
