Date: 1984

The HP 9114 was a portable (floppy) disk drive designed as a companion to the company’s first laptop, the 110. Limitations in wireless technology and semiconductor memory in the mid-1980s made a portable disk drive important to optimize the 110’s performance, so Hewlett-Packard designed a drive that was state-of-the-art. It could run on batteries or AC power and it used the then-cutting-edge technology of 3.5″ floppy disks instead of the larger, more fragile 5″ disks. It connected to the 110 and other Hewlett-Packard devices through an HP-IL interconnection bus.
